AEROPLANE INTERVIEW
Hello guys. Tell us a bit about yourselves, where are you from and how did you start
producing together?
Vito: We started 4 years ago, I owned a record store in Belgium at the time. I was
already making music for a long time, play piano and others instruments, and when we met, I
just started making more electronic music.
Stephen: I was a DJ already for 10 years, and I used to buy some records
at his store. We talked a lot about music, and we decided to try something.
How would you describe the Aeroplane sound and what are your inspirations?
Vito: It's all about the melodies, with a disco beat. I'm inspired a lot by all the Black soul music,
and 70's Disco and also my Italian roots, which mean Lucio Battisti, Adriano Celentano,...
And we like to mix all that with more psychedelic sounds and guitars, more like Pink Floyd,
Fleetwood Mac, 70's rock in general...
Stephen: Aerodiscomusic! J Melancholic, Vaporous, Cosmic, Italo, Pop … I collect italo-disco
and synth-pop records since a long time and you will find a lot of our influences in this music..
Also, when I started Deejaying in 1988-89, it was the new-beat buzz in Belgium. I think you can
hear both on Aeroplane tracks.
Our remixes sound a bit different than our own tracks, but we don't like to do always the same
things, and we get more inspired by the original track.
Were you surprised at the success of your first ep or did you have a good idea it's gonna
be big when Lindstrom and Prins Thomas dropped it in their Essential Mix on Radio One?
We we're waiting for the release of that 12" for a long time! We've done Caramellas one year
and a half ago ! Aeroplane, the self-titled track a little bit after ... We were expecting for the
reactions and Dirk , the label-manager of our label Eskimo really believed in the 12". One of
the first reactions we had was Lindstrom and Prins Thomas for the BBC ESSENTIAL Mix, we
were very surprised !! But very happy...
What is the scene like in Belgium at the moment? Stephen is a resident DJ at the Make Up
Club in Ghent, right? They've had some cool bookings over the last year ... guys like Prins
Thomas, Quiet Village and Mark Seven!
Stephen: The scene is getting bigger in our small country with the “Make Up Club” of course
but also with “Café Capital” in Antwerp, and sometimes at “Dirty Dancing” in Brussels. Except
from this three you find a lot of Minimal-Techno-Electro and commercials clubs. You can also
find little parties sometimes... Maybe that's the reason why we play more in foreign countries
than in Belgium with Aeroplane.
Vito: I'm also been a DJ for a long time, but I left it when I started producing... but now that I can
play the music I do and I like, it's a pleasure to get back behind the decks. Fresh news :
Aeroplane will be resident @ Make Up Club in 2008!
Do you DJ together as well and what about live shows?
Yes, we mix back to back... As for the live shows, we are thinking about it, it will come with an
album maybe... It's hard to do because we'd like to play our music with a live band...
Have you released music under any other pseudonyms?
Yes, but at the time we were just musicians, not Producers, and that's why we are not
completely happy of our first records, under the “Javelo” alias.
What is next in store for us from Aeroplane?
The next 12" on Eskimo "Pacific Air Race" will be released the 10th of December. Next there
will be a remix for Cobra Dukes and for Das Pop, both on Prestel Rec.
A remix for Low Motion Disco on Eskimo…
We also worked with Kathy Diamond but the release is planned for march 2008 always on
Eskimo for the 3rd 12". And more to come ;-)
