KOOL DJ DUST INTERVIEW
hey Daniel. Thanks for mix! Please tell us where you are from?
I'm from Stockholm, Sweden. Planet Earth
You've had a few records and mix CDs like "Disco Opera" from 2008 out as Kool DJ Dust. What
new releases have you got lined up?
One disco reedit 12" for UK-label No Dice, thats coming out any second now. And a split 12" with
Mirror People for Permanent Vacation to be out pretty soon too, that features two original songs in
more italo-electro stylee.
This is the Kool DJ Dust side of things.
You've also released quite a bit of stuff and have had success with music under your own name
Daniel Savio, right? Is it much different from your Kool DJ Dust music?
To me its not a big difference actually music wise except for that when I do the "Kool-stuff" its more
or less disco oriented and when I do my "Savio-things" its pure Skweee/Electro/Funk! And also
Daniel Savio doesn´t use samples or plunder old disco joints like that thieving Kool DJ Dust.
Total thief.
So you have been producing for a while. Have you also made music under any other aliases or
with any groups?
Yes, I was one third of swedish electro-dub-techno trio Hundarna Fran Soder. 2000-2008
And then I did some stuff with my friend Samo under the name Over The Hill or O.T.H, we did some
edits and remixes and stuff for a little while.
What kind of music do you imagine making 5 years from now?
The same as I done the last 5, but way better! If thats possible, ha ha.
The mix you did for CITP is quite relaxed, how is it different from you typical DJ set?
Depending on the occasion really. I like to play all sorts of tunes whether it be Disco or Rock or
whatever, it might actually seem pretty random even to myself. But it´s really not.
What's the club/record digging scene like in Sweden?
It´s quite hard to tell actually other than that there are lots of DJ´s that have quite extensive
knowledge about obscure disco and stuff and that all of us are friends and rivals. Thats on the
digging scene. The "club"-scene at least for good music, whats good for me anyway, is mostly me
and or any of my friends/rivals playing records in a posh bar somewhere, rarely any
dance floors being rocked unfortunately. For that I will have to play in Norway, Finland or Russia etc.
etc.
How would you describe you musical roots or your big musical influences?
The cliché, HIP HOP of course is what really got me into DJ-ing and stuff. I was heavily into music at
an early age, I must have been the only Pink Floyd fan at my kindergarden as an example. Listening
to Darkside Of the Moon, Final Cut and The Wall at hours on end as a 5 year old.
How did you move into disco?
My uncle was and still is a big disco fan and he got me into the early eighties stuff in the early 80´s
when i was a kid. So I always had it in the back of my mind. But in 92-93, when all this great rap
music came out some of that music came back to me and I was very interested in find "originals"
for loops used in those songs so thats how the cratedigging started and buying my first
sampler and all that stuff. "I owe it all to HIP HOP"
What 5 records did you listen to today?
No one I hate to tell you. But I listened to a whole lot of records last night so that evens the score.
Anything else you would like mention?
Yeah! I wish that some of the "disco heads" would check out this skweee-thing were doing up here
in the north. I think some of you would find some of it very appealing. At least thats what I hope.
Thanks for answering some questions, would you like to give a shout out to anyone?
PEACE AND LOVE TO EVERYBODY IN THE U.N.I.V.E.R.S.E
