JOLYON GREEN INTERVIEW
Hey Jo! It's an honor to have you on Cool In The Pool. Please tell us where are living at the
moment and did you grow up there?
I live in West London now but grew up in the north of England, Leeds, then lived in Manchester
for 4 years. Even though I've lived in London for 14 years I'm still northern at heart.
You are known as a balearic music aficionado. Can you share what you know about the
history of this style of playing / music and what draws you to it?
It all comes from the open minded DJs in Ibiza during the 70s, 80s, early 90s and a few British
DJs who have taken that spirt on. In Ibiza they played a wide selection of music, often very
obscure and off the wall quirky records, often quite serious music, anything from classical to
rock, reggae, disco, jazz, fusion...I don't like one kind of music so I'm drawn to it. It's mostly
mood music, less dance music for me these days.
Can you describe maybe 10 records that encapsulate the sound for you?
How about the first ten on the mix :-)
Balearic music has made an undeniable return in the last few years. What would you credit
that to?
A certain generation of people who discovered clubbing and house music in the late 80s are
in their late 30s, early 40s. Inevitably most people want to slow down and they are more
interested in melody than just rhythm, so you become more open minded, more balearic...less
dancing, more listening. I've almost lost interest in dance music if I'm honest.
Is there anything you don't like about it becoming popular again?
Too many really terrible records labelled 'balearic'. Most of them are anything but. Too many
terrible euro-records. People who try to make balearic a fashion thing...bleurgh.
Your online ambient mixes are legendary and showcase deep digging skills. Have you
always had dusty fingers?
Yep, since I started record shopping seriously aged 15/16. I go digging for records once a
week if I can. It's how you build up a really great record collection...as long as there are record
shops I'll be buying records...
How would you describe the style of the mix you did for CITP?
Balearic. Very laid back, sunset music. Try listening to it on your ipod on Benirras beach at
sunset for best effect.
You are a resident dj, with your partner Matthew, at the Lowlife parties in London. How did
that come about and what has been the highlight for you so far?
I sold Matthew a record on ebay around the year 2000 and we met up for a drink to exchange it,
both loved disco, similar kind of love of digging for records, the history of the dance music
scene, so we clicked right away. We both were swapping tapes with Bill Brewster - latest
discoveries, mostly disco stuff - and he asked us to DJ at Lowlife. That was 20001 I think...and
we have been doing it ever since.
What is it that you think makes the partnership work?
We both love the same kind of music, though Matthew is probably a lot more into disco than I
am these days. And we're really good friends with a lot of affection for each other.
Do you have any Lowlife favourite records?
Dennis Parker - Like An Eagle, Clea - Download It (make sure you get the right mix though),
Chaz Jankel - Glad To Know You
Do you have any other dj residencies at the moment?
Nope, I've pretty much quit playing out these days, other than chill out/balearic music.
What's your favourite clubs to play at?
Lowlife and 'Nado...anything in Manchester is always a top laugh.
How did you get into djing and collecting records?
Discovered House music when I was about 15, became totally obsessed with Chicago house,
Trax, DJI etc. and started buying records every work. Eventually I fancied playing them to my
friends :-)
What would make the world a better place?
Open air clubs with wide ranging music policies and more open minds.
What's your favourite drink? I owe you a couple!
Mine's a White Russian!
