PBR STREETGANG INTERVIEW
Hey PBR, Thanks for the rocking mix! Please tell us who makes up the gang and where you
are each from?
The Boat consists of Bonar Bradberry and Tom Thorpe who both now live in Leeds , Tom
is originally from the hills of Huddersfield and Bonar was born in grime of Birmingham City.
Have you known each other long and how did you start DJing and making music together?
Well we've known each other for 6-7 years, meeting in Birmingham. We were Djing and
promoting different nights and would go to the same records store where we seemed to
be the only two into the same weird and wonderful sounds and so would share a pile of
records. (often getting strange looks from the in vogue "funky house normals'' !) But we
didn't start playing as PBR Streetgang until a couple of years later when we were warming
up in Leeds for X-Press2 and thought we'd have a go on there 4 deck 2 mixer set up .... it
really clicked so it went from there ....
How do you gig together, do you play back to back and how would you describe your style?
KITCHEN SINK .... it's got everything in it !! We use pretty much everything Vinyl, CDs,
Ableton, efx boxes etc ... it can be a pain in the butt to set up at times, but its worth it when
its all running ... Our Style .... ?? eclecticism of the highest order .... we slowly veer from
tangent to tangent .... but always trying make people dance, that's the most important thing
... we may have beards but were not Wizards !!
What does the "PBR" stand for?
Patrol Boat Riverine ...... its then name of the boat in "Apocalypse Now" were the vessel
that takes you into the jungle and brings you back out again ... changed, but maybe not for
the better
This is an exiting week for you guys with couple of your records come out. What should we be
looking out for?
Yeah definitely, its kind of all come at once ... on the 20th of October we know have the
following release out:
PBR Streetgang EP - Busy Bee/ the tale of Wild Bob on RED MUSIC
Crazy P - Love on the Line (PBR Streetgang Speckled Dub Mix ) on 2020 Vision
Bonar Bradberry Edits On Mindless Boogie
So quite a busy week !!!
How did your residency at the Asylum come about and what's the night like?
We've been residents from day one (5years ago) ... well, we'd have to be it is Tom's night
that he set up with a friend ... it's on once a month @ the Mint Club in Leeds which is one of
the best small clubs in the country ... the night itself is like a hedonistic carnival of odd
fellows chasing their own tails till its time to go home, which usually means around 7a.m.
... our motto is, " if its good music .. play it !"
What guests have had over and who would you still like to see play there?
LIke the music the guest Dj's vary from Danny Krivit and Theo Parrish to Damien Lazarus
and Erol Alkan .. there's a few I think we'd both still love to get over but ones that
definitely sticks out is Laurent Garnier and David Mancuso.
You also through some infamous after parties, right?
Yeah we're thinking of starting them up again soon ...we'll let you know ... ; ) But yes a
couple of years back we used to do some great little riots in an old recording studio called
'Sponge' ... they'd be on after the Asylum parties so would start around 6ish and carry till
midday sometimes... the were small crowds, everyone knew each other and if you didn't
you had a load of new friends by the end of it ! even big Dj's from other nights would come
play for nothing it was a pretty special vibe.. sadly they knocked the studio down a year or
so ago.
You've been fortunate enough to play clubs like Fabric and the V-Festival. What's been your
favourite gig so far?
Fabric and V festivals were both fantastic but both very different, so was our mini Festival
in Croatia and our outdoor parties in Leeds this year ... the 'WeLove' gigs @ Space in Ibiza
this Summer have just been amazing too... life Rocks ... hahahah!!!!
What are your past and contemporary musical influences?
Have you got a couple of days ???? Seriously though if we have to condense it down to
very few Past and Present ...
Growing up ... all the obvious ones like Stevie Wonder, Prince, Roy Ayers, George Clinton,
Fleetwood Mac, Kate Bush etc .. but some less obvious the Cure, Neds Atomic Dustbin ,
The Pixies, CUD, and even folky kinda stuff like James Taylor, Jose Feliciano was a big
influence ..
TODAY - still everyone and everything but if were on about our kind of "scene" then ...
Lindstrom, Prins Thomas, Chicken Lips ( and all of their separate guises), Maurice Fulton,
Crazy P ( we've got like a million others, but they're the first that come to mind ... oh yeah
how could we forget, and of course...... Benny Hill !!!! ????!!!!!
I know Bonar works at 20:20 Recording as remix manager. What's that like?
Like any Office Job !!! haha ... no , its great to be honest, everyone working there is really
cool and supportive ... the artists on my roster are people I really respect.. plus its great to
watch artists grow and develop over the years like Simon Baker, Burnski and Audiojack
What do you think the future holds in store for PBR Streetgang?
