                                        PHIL MISON INTERVIEW

Hey Phil. Thanks for the cool mix! Your style seems much influenced by
Ibiza and the whole sunrise,  balearic vibe ... how did this come about?
You lived and dj'ed in Ibiza for a few years, right?

I DJ'D AT THE CAFE DEL MAR IN SPRING 93 AND SUMMER 94 AFTER MEETING JOSE
PADILLA IN A RECORD SHOP IN SOHO.  I WAS DJ'ING AT THE MILK BAR AT THE TIME, HE
CAME DOWN, HEARD WHAT I WAS PLAYING AND ASKED IF I'D LIKE TO GO OUT TO IBIZA
WHILE HE WENT TO THAILAND.

Please tell us a bit about yourself - where are you from, and how did you
get into electronic music / the dance scene?

I'M FROM SUNNY ESSEX, A PLACE ABOUT 30 MILES FROM LONDON. I STARTED GOING
TO THE WEST END WHEN I WAS 16/17 AND BUYING RECORDS FROM PLACES LIKE
GROOVE THAT LED ON TO GOING OUT TO CLUBS LIKE RAW/DISCOTHEQUE.

Do you and Pete Herbert attach a certain sound to each of the monikers you use,
like how do you decide to release something as either Reverso or Frontera?

REVERSO IS MORE DANCEFLOOR ORIENTATED, FRONTERA IS SLIGHTY MORE
ELECTRONIC AND MELLOW.

You seem to have a strong link with the prolific record label from Denmark,
Music for Dreams. In fact your Cantoma project's ' Pandejero" was the first
release on it. How did you connect with them?

A FRIEND WAS DJ'ING YEARS AGO AT ROSKILDE FESTIVAL IN DENMARK, I MET
KENNETH BAKER,A DANISH DJ THAT HAD BEEN PUTTING ON CLUBS IN COPENHAGEN
SINCE 88, WE TALKED ABOUT MUSIC, BECAME FRIENDS AND HE PERSUADED ME TO
MAKE AN ALBUM (NOT ALL IN THE SAME NIGHT THOUGH)

Are you working on any solo stuff on the moment as well, can we expect new
Cantoma material?

I'M WORKING ON A NEW CANTOMA ALBUM NOW, WILL HOPEFULLY BE OUT NEXT YEAR.

You have also released a very impressive amount of dj mix compilations
since the mid 1990s, including the highly regarded Soundcolor series. How
many have you actually done, which did you enjoy the most, and do you have
plans for any more?

I'VE DONE ABOUT 12. SOUNDCOLORS WERE MY FAVOURITES, I'M DOING A COMPILATION
FOR MUSIC FOR DREAMS AND HAVE JUST CO-COMPILED WITH PETER VISTI A
COMPILATION FOR A DANISH RESTAURANT CALLED MORTENS KRO.

How long have you been making music and djing?

I STARTED PLAYING FRIENDS PARTIES IN 87, NOTHING SERIOUS JUST MESSING ABOUT
REALLY.
THE FIRST MUSIC I MADE WAS ABOUT 96.

What's your favourite club / parties to play at and do you still play in
Ibiza?

ANYWHERE WITH A GOOD SOUND SYSYEM AND PEOPLE INTO THE MUSIC. I'VE BEEN TO
IBIZA THIS YEAR , JUST FOR A HOLIDAY THOUGH!

How would you define the balearic style of music and djing, and how do you
feel about it's comeback?

' WHAT IS BALEARIC ' IS THE MILLION DOLLAR QUESTION! IT WAS ANYTHING THAT
ALFREDO PLAYED AT AMNESIA IN IBIZA FROM 86-89. THERE ARE LOADS OF RECORDS
STILL THAT HAVE THAT BALEARIC FEEL FROM OLD STUFF LIKE THE CHAPLIN BAND TO
NEWER STUFF LIKE KRISNADANOFF.

There are so much great new cosmic / italo / balearic / house music being
released (and "re-released") at the moment, and it's coming from many parts
of the world, like the fantastic stuff coming from Norway and California,
like Studio, Hatchback etc. What is influencing you at the moment and what
are your favourite acts and djs?

CERTAIN DJ'S LIKE MARK SEVEN, HARVEY, MOONBOOTS, GERRY ROONEY ARE ALWAYS
GOOD TO LISTEN TOO. I'VE BEEN INTO  THE WIZARDS SLEEVE MIX OF MIDLAKE AND
STUFF BY LEE DOUGLAS RECENTLY.

What are your 5 all time favourite records?

CANT SAY THESE ARE THE DEFINITVE FIVE OF AL TIME , BUT OFF THE TOP OF MY
HEAD

2. PENGUIN CAFE ORCHESTRA - OSCAR TANGO
3. ANN SEXTON - YOU'VE BEEN GONE TO LONG
