STEPHEN HAWKINGS INTERVIEW
Hey there guys. Please tell us where you are from and who makes up the Stephen
Hawkings posse?
We're Kristofer Matti, Harald Magnusson & Emil Broomé and we live in Malmö. A town as far
south as you can get in Sweden
Why the name Stephen Hawkings?
Because we love black holes...
How would you describe your sound and what inspires you?
Our description on our Stephen Hawkings nights is psychedelic rock disco ethno jazz fusion
and that leaves it pretty open for us to play what we want without limitations. All three of us like
digging and have all quite eclectic collections, and enjoy looking for all kind of genres, with a
focus on interesting rhythms.
How did you guys meet and start playing records together?
Malmö is a quite small town so eventually you run into everyone, at least if they play similar
music and that's pretty much what happened in our case. And since there are only a few
record stores here, we always met up in some dusty basement looking for the same records.
You've had some very interesting bookings at your parties like Richard Norris (Beyond the
Wizards Sleeve) and Mo Morris (A Mountain of One). What's been your best night so far and
tell us a bit more about the parties that you have?
Well we run two clubs: Explorer's club where the focus is more on social gatherings and
decadent living and Stephen Hawkings which is more of a club club. Our best Explorer's club
was probably the open air crayfish party at the modern art muséum and the best Stephen
night. To hard... Many nights at the Jeriko club in Malmö. To mention one was with our friends
at the psychedelic club "The Space Between" 5 hours of strobelight and shitloads of weird
beats on mushrooms....
Do you dj anywhere else?
Yes, we dj pretty much everywhere in Malmö, and besides, Stephen is a club without a
permanent adress.
How did you get into the psyche / ethno / balearic sound that you have? I mean how would
you describe your musical route to where you are at the moment?
Kristofer and Harald started out playing soul, disco and jazz. Far down the road picked up the
cosmic thing when the disco seemed a bit cheesy and overplayed. And from there on into what
we do today, beyond cosmic. Emil on the other hand was more into kraut and weird 80´s and
ended up in some kind of balearic mess.
Do you guys make music as well as collect music?
No. Just collecting, but Emil is involved in a project that will release records with both old and
new stuff, edits and more. These will be released in the near future.
Are there good record stores in Malmo?
Yes but very few. Quite good actually.
What's stephen hawkings's top 5 tunes today?
